Pattern Fish!

My students have been learning about patterns this past week!

We talked about patterns around the room, patterns on the 120 chart, labeling patterns, and pattern units. It was A LOT of pattern talk.

I actually had never taught an explicit pattern lesson until this year, but these little ones needed it!

After we did plenty lessons making patterns with cubes and labeling them, my new first grade team showed me this fantastic book:
[Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris]

On each page of this book, there are underwater creatures with all sorts of patterns on them for the students to find, identify and label (ABAB, AAB, ABC, etc.). At the end of the book, there are also plenty of extension activities for your students to continue practicing patterns!

When we finished reading the book, I gave each of my students 2 blank fish and they got to draw their own patterns on them. They cut them out and we added them to the top of our whiteboard:

^^Really bad lighting, but you get the idea^^

I don't have the fish template, since one of my teammates gave it to me, but I did a quick search and found the following options for you if you want your kids to complete this fun and easy activity:

Fish Pattern (1)
Fish Pattern (2)
Fish Pattern (3)

Tomorrow is Friday - YAHOO!

Oh... and in case anyone is counting... I am 15 days away from "I DO!"

:) :) :) :) :) :)
